Shark fin soup.

Shark fin soup is a gourmet dish in China that is served on special occasions. The fin itself offers little taste, but rather adds a pleasant texture to the dish.

The controversial issue surrounding shark fin soup is that fishermen catch sharks, bring them onto the boat, cut off their fins, and throw them back into the water alive. Without their fins the sharks sink to the bottom of the ocean and die.

There is much debate inside China and around the world about getting rid of this violent tradition. There are many campains and ads running in China urging people not to order Shark fin soup.

People are afraid of sharks and i think the stigma surrounding them makes them less alive in the eyes of the people cutting of the fins. The sharks suffer until they die at the bottom of the ocean. As the picture above points out, up to 73 million sharks a year face this gruesome death.

The best way to win the fight against the shark fin trade is to raise awareness.
